Awareness: Recognizing AI's pervasive role in society and its dual potential for both positive and negative impacts.
Capability: Understanding both the capabilities of AI tools and our own abilities to use them effectively, particularly through the lens of prompt engineering.
Knowledge: Grasping fundamental AI concepts, from data safety to recognizing deep fakes.
Critical Thinking: Applying critical analysis to AI outputs, understanding biases, and maintaining ethical considerations.

Navigating the Complexities of AI in Education

Dr. Anders shares his journey into AI, which began as an inquiry into academic misconduct. "My biggest fear is that students would start to use it and then we wouldn't be prepared as teachers," he recalls. This foresight led him to advocate for a structured approach to integrating AI into academia.

The conversation also touches on the balance between foundational knowledge and the use of AI as an educational tool. Dr. Anders draws a parallel with calculators in math education (although admittedly not a complete analogy), stressing the importance of foundational knowledge before introducing technological aids.

"We need foundational knowledge for them to be able to understand what are numbers? How does this work together?"
