E-Ink Evolutions: Remarkable Devices & Their Impact
Dive into the world of e-ink with Mitchell Scott's insights and innovations.

Welcome back to another edition of After the Chat! This time, I sat down with Mitchell Scott, a DevOps manager by day and a passionate tinkerer of e-ink devices by night. Join us as we explore the fascinating world of e-ink technology and discuss how these devices have evolved over the years. While the episode also contains a lot of content on the Supernote Platform, this newsletter focuses primarily on Mitchell's specific use cases for reMarkable.
The E-Ink Journey
Mitchell recalls his introduction to e-ink technology with the Kindle Touch, way back in 2011. He juxtaposes this with his experience using the first-gen iPad, highlighting the Kindle's limitations in comparison. "Super limited," he remarks, as he reflects on the Kindle's capabilities back then.
Fast forward to 2022, Mitchell found himself captivated by the reMarkable tablet, thanks to a colleague's introduction. The reMarkable, though not highly regarded as an e-reader, appealed to him for its versatility and the freedom to manage his reading preferences without DRM restrictions.
Why Remarkable?
Mitchell's journey into the world of e-ink note-taking began out of necessity, becoming a new parent had made keeping track of tasks in his head a challenge. This led to his investment in the reMarkable 2 and subsequently the reMarkable Paper Pro and Paper Pure. "I needed to be able to run this how I want to if the company disappears tomorrow," Mitchell explains, underscoring the importance of self-hosting and independence in his choice.
The Role of Remarkable Devices
Mitchell uses his reMarkable Paper Pro extensively as a productivity tool, color-coding to-dos and meeting notes. This device remains tethered to his desk, while the more portable Paper Pro Move serves as his primary e-reader. Despite skepticism about reMarkable's e-reader capabilities, Mitchell has read extensively on it, proving its utility beyond just note-taking.
The Paper Pro Move is also a handy companion for Mitchell's family outings, providing a screen for his kids to color on at restaurants without the distraction of games. "It's been a nice use case," he notes, reflecting on the balance between entertainment and utility.
reManager: Simplifying E-Ink Modifications
Mitchell and l delve into the creation of reManager, a tool that revolutionized how users install mods on their Remarkable devices. Before reManager, mods were scattered across platforms like GitHub, each requiring complex installation steps. Mitchell's innovation offers a streamlined process, empowering users to customize their Remarkable experience with ease.
In this conversation, Ed and Mitchell explore not just the technical aspects but also the personal stories and practical considerations that shape the e-ink landscape.
